I’m gonna keep it real with you: last week sucked. Thank God Washington came out to play, so the weekend wasn’t a total loss. But the past is the past, and we’re going to bounce back this week. Be sure to follow ALL of my picks on the sports action app (@nickyds23).
My record through 3 weeks of college football: 28-22-1
Buffalo (-4) @ Rutgers
The Buffalo Bulls are one of the hottest teams in football right now. Led by 6’8″ quarterback Tyree Jackson, the Bulls are undefeated with wins over Temple, Eastern Michigan and Delaware State. #MACtion experts are dubbing Buffalo as potential MAC champs and are all aboard the hype train. Rutgers continues to embarrass the B1G with bad losses to Ohio State and Kansas. Rolling with the best football team in Buffalo this weekend should be a safe bet.
Minnesota (+3) @ Maryland
Row. The. Boat. PJ Fleck is doing good things in the Land of 10,000 Lakes as the Golden Gophers are off to a 3-0 start. They face their first in-conference opponent this weekend in a weak Maryland team. Minnesota has covered the spread all three weeks of the season and I don’t see that changing this week. Go Gophers!
Other safe bets: Clemson (-17), Akron (+18.5), Miami OH (-5.5)
South Carolina @ Vanderbilt (+2.5) or (+110 money line)
South Carolina is coming to Nashville on a full week of rest after their game against Marshall was canceled last week. Despite popular opinion, this may not be a good thing. Fatigue is not a big factor this early in the season and teams are still trying to build chemistry as they get into conference play. South Carolina could very easily come out rusty and get rolled over early by a sneaky good Vanderbilt team. Vandy has played well at home this season with easy wins over Nevada and Middle Tennessee State. The Commodores played #8 Notre Dame very tough at Notre Dame last weekend and will be coming into this game looking for blood. Lock in Vandy as home dogs and enjoy your profits.
Texas Tech (+13) or (+400 money line) @ #15 Oklahoma State
Oklahoma State looks great. They’re 3-0 and blew out a solid Boise State team last week. With that said, this Texas Tech offense looks damn near unstoppable when they get going. The Tech offense is averaging 70 points over the last two games, including a huge 63-49 win over Houston last week. Kliff Kingsbury has the offense rolling and could definitely upset Oklahoma State in Stillwater this weekend (or at least cover the spread).
Lock of the Week
Louisville @ Virginia (-5)
Since the departure of Heisman trophy winner Lamar Jackson, the Louisville Cardinals look terrible. The team has somehow stayed afloat with a 2-1 record despite narrowly losing to Western Kentucky in week 3. Even FCS Indiana State was able to hang in with the Cards until eventually getting blown out in the 4th quarter. Virginia, on the other hand, is thriving. The team should probably be 3-0 but lost at Indiana in monsoon-type weather. The pass-heavy team struggled in the rain and only lost to the Hoosiers by 4 points. Rain won’t be an issue this weekend and the Hokies should have no problem throwing all over the Cards. Lock it in!
