Early Look at Week 5 CFB Lines

I really hope you hopped on with my picks last week… We cashed six of the eight picks I posted, including the Texas Tech upset over #15 Oklahoma State. I’m back with some more winning picks so make sure you lock em in and tweet @thebench_ your winnings!

Safe Bets

Florida Atlantic (-3) @ Middle Tennessee State

Lane Kiffin’s Florida Atlantic team is much better than the media wants to give them credit for. The Owls are a high powered offense that have pulled in several big time FBS transfers. Despite being 2-2, they played #16 UCF pretty tough and suffered another loss to #7 Oklahoma. Middle Tennessee State has shown nothing to only be 3 point underdogs and I fully expect the Owls to shut this game down early with a comfortable lead.

Purdue (-3) @ Nebraska

Look, Nebraska sucks. They’re 0-3 with losses to Colorado, Troy (!), and Michigan. Purdue started the season slow with two early losses to Northwestern and Eastern Michigan, but they’re slowly trending in the right direction. The Boilermakers nearly pulled out a victory two weeks ago against a very talented Missouri team that gave #2 Georgia some trouble last week. Missouri escaped that game 40-37 on a game winning field goal. Last week, Jeff Brahm’s Boilers crushed #23 Boston College 30-13. Purdue should easily be able to win this game by 3 points.

Other Safe Bets: BYU (+17.5), Buffalo (-8), Oregon (-3)

Risky Bets

#7 Stanford (+165) @ #8 Notre Dame

Stanford is heading to South Bend coming off a huge comeback win. They were losing the entire game to the #20 Oregon Ducks and put together an incredible 4th quarter comeback on the road to remain undefeated. Notre Dame has looked shaky this season, as they narrowly beat a 1-3 Ball State by 8 points and only beat Vanderbilt by 5. Last week, Brian Kelly opted for a change in quarterback, which seemed to work well as they crushed Wake Forest 56-27. This should be a great game, maybe the best of the weekend, but I think Stanford could definitely pull out a victory against the Fighting Irish.

Toledo (+245) @ Fresno State

I’m not really sure why Toledo are 8 point underdogs in this game. Yeah, Toledo is traveling to the west coast for a 10:30 game, but they’re still the superior team. Toledo has been a perennial powerhouse in the MAC and are favorites to win the MAC West again this year. The Rockets stomped both VMI and Nevada in their two victories. Their only loss came at the hands of #16 Miami. Fresno State has beaten Idaho and a 0-3 UCLA, while suffering a loss to a mediocre Minnesota. Toledo should not only cover the 8 point spread, but also pull out a victory in Fresno.

Lock of the Week

Last week’s lock of the week of course cashed as Virginia easily handled the -3 spread and blew out Louisville 27-3. This weeks lock of the week is an easy decision – the best team in the country is favored by a measly five points at home.

That’s right, the DUKE BLUE DEVILS are this week’s lock of the week. Duke is an impressive 4-0, rolling over anyone who dares challenge them. This weeks opponent, Virginia Tech, is coming off the biggest upset of the year. An 0-3 Old Dominion steam rolled the top 25 ranked Hokies 49-35 last week. After the game, Virginia Tech’s top pass rusher was kicked off the squad for “violating team rules”.  If that wasn’t bad enough, their starting QB was injured in the game and is out for an extended time. The Hokies are in a state of disarray while the Blue Devils are rolling and ready for back to back home wins.  Bet the house on Duke this week.
