Blame Elway for Not Finding Coach, QB to Make Broncos Successful

Since winning Superbowl 50, the Denver Broncos have gone downhill. Whether it be poor quarterback play or not having the right coach, the Broncos just can’t seem to find their winning ways again. A big part of the blame should be directed at the General Manager, John Elway. That’s tough to say considering what Elway has already done for the franchise as a player, so throwing him under the bus is kind of a tough pill to swallow. I get it. Throughout his tenure as a GM he has yet to find two big pieces to having a successful team: a head coach and quarterback.

The Broncos have went through three head coaches since Elway arrived in 2013. John Fox coached one season under Elway, Gary Kubiak coached for the next two years, and Vance Joseph took over in 2017, but was recently fired after back to back losing seasons.

Currently, the Broncos have meetings with several head coaching candidates including former Colts head coach Chuck Pagano, Rams QB coach Zac Taylor, Steelers OL coach Mike Munchak, Patriots DC Brian Flores, and Bears DC Vic Fangio.

Since 2013, the Broncos have drafted quarterbacks Zac Dysert (Round 7), Trevor Siemian (Round 7), Paxton Lynch (Round 1), and Chad Kelly (Round 7). Only Siemian saw time as a full-time starter, but the team has since moved on. However, none of these draft picks remain on the team today.

Beyond the draft, the only quarterback worth noting in the Elway era is acquisition of Peyton Manning, who led the Broncos two Super Bowls.

The Broncos currently hold the tenth overall pick in the 2019 NFL Draft. Many experts predict the Broncos will select Missouri quarterback Drew Lock.

The 2019 quarterback free agent class will consist of Teddy Bridgewater, Nick Foles, Tyrod Taylor, and Ryan Fitzpatrick (who the Broncos entertained the idea of signing in the past). Other free agents this off-season include Trevor Siemian and Brock Osweiler, who have both played for the Broncos in the Elway era already.

I’m not sure how many attempts Elway has to find his coach/quarterback combo, but he will have the opportunity this off-season to get that done.
